Hi guys, while reading the story, I wondered whether the Scarlet Pimpernel is the hero of the story. Ms. Boyd mentioned how strongly the author persuades the reader to hate people like Bigot and have sympathy towards the people who tried to seek freedom but failed. At first, I thought the Scarlet Pimpernel was the hero of the story because it helped many people to find freedom, which was hard to get. However, in the perspective of the people who do not allow peasants to seek freedom, the Scarlet Pimpernel is a threat to them because if they accidentally allow people to go past the gate, they will be executed. The Scarlet Pimpernel is a terrifying character to the guards, not a hero.
To me, it was very hard to say whether the Scarlet Pimpernel was a hero after this question came to my head. If I say that the Scarlet Pimpernel was a hero, then I would be biased and would have been 'persuaded' by the author. However if I say that the Scarlet Pimpernel is not a hero, then another question comes to my mind: then who is the hero in the story?
What do you guys think?

I don't really get what you were saying, but, I think scarlet pimpernel is somewhat a hero. In my opinion, they are still helping to save the people. "the scarlet pimpernel is a threat to them because if they accidentally allow people to go past the gate, they will be executed" = well it is the people's choice to go past the gate. if you don't take the risk, how will you be saved? if they don't take the risk, then they will have to stay behind the gate forever. It is their choice whether or not they will take the risk, executed or not. The scarlet pimpernel is just helping them if they take that risk.

Since there are no set standard whether someone is hero or not, scarlet pimpernel is hero to the rich who tried to flee. However, Scarlet isn't a hero to the poor who tried to kill the rich people.

It is a hard question, but usually if there is a hero, there is a villain, and for the villain, hero is a villain. (it's confusing ) However, I think the Scarlet Pimpernel is a hero since the people who do not allow peasants to seek freedom are considered as evils by society. It is very cruel to kill someone who is innocent. The Scarlet Pimpernel is a hero for those innocent aristos and for society, and only a villain for those guards who kill aristos. So, I think the scarlet Pimpernel is a hero in this story even though it is a threatening character for some of the guards.

To the guard Scarlet is the threat meaning Scarlet is not the hero to the riches. By different perspective he can become hero, but opposite side will think him as a threat, this concept is shown not only in this story but also in movies you see, heroes with supper powers seem to save everyone, but there will always be someone or group of people that is damaged, and in the movies of course they don't show other's perspective meaning definition of hero through out movies and series became someone that helps the majority. Based on the definition Scarlet Pimpernel will be the hero of the story for now.

I think a hero is a very subjective idea. Like war for example: for us South Koreans, we'd think that we are the good guys and whoever is willing to risk his/her life to fight against the North, then he/she is a hero. But for the North Koreans, they'd think that they are the good guys and the same thing as for heroes. It really depends on the person's perspective. If the so called hero shares your own personal idea of justice, then that hero is a hero to you. If not, then that hero is simply a villain to you. I guess it's really a matter of what you believe in and who believes in it too.

yes, he is a hero i think. because as you read the book. scarlet Pimpernel tried to help and save the people. when i say people, the number of amount are very large. he should be a hero becuase he help to escape people from the country. It is like helping north korea people to come over south korea.

Is he or she a hero? Well to me a hero is someone who is willing to sacrifice for a greater good and other's happiness. And until now, I don't see any of this sacrifice from him. Perhaps if he risks his life to save the nobles, then he would be the heroes of the nobles. However, until now and from what I predict, I do not think he will be willing to risk his life and die for the nobles. He seems like a joker, a very mischievous person.
Also, I think the idea of a hero is a very subjective view. It can be that the Scarlet Pimpernel is the hero of the nobles but he or she is also a hassle and a trouble for the rebellion. Likewise, if a leader of the rebellion is to catch this Scarlet Pimpernel, whoever caught him will be the hero fort eh rebellions and an enemy for the nobles. Thus, heroes cannot be defined objectively.

I think scarlet pimpernel is not a hero because he is saving corrupted aristocrats. Scarlet Pimpernel is taking away chance of getting revenge from citizens. Since citizens had hard time from aristocrat's high tax rates and no benefit, citizens were very mad and made rebel. However, Scarlet Pimpernel is ignoring citizen's sadness and save aristocrats from citizens. Scarlet Pimpernel have to think how hard time did Citizens have. So I think Scarlet Pimpernel is not a hero for people. He is just bad hero for minors ( Aristocrats). He is not a hero for public and majority of people.

In my opinion, Scarlet Pimpernel is not a hero. First, I believe that it's reasonable for the crowd to kill the aristocrats because the aristocrats, like their ancestors, have been living their luxurious lives meanwhile at the same time ignoring the citizens' starvation. So it's reasonable for the crowd to kill the aristocrats. In the story, Scarlet Pimpernel is preventing people from having their revenge on the aristocrats. Therefore, I believe that Scarlet Pimpernel is not a hero.

I do believe that the Scarlet Pimpernel is the hero of this story. As the story unfolds, the members or specific members of the Scarlet Pimpernel will begin to reveal (my guess). If that association contains the hero, then the story must introduce them formally rather then having their identity remain hidden. Referencing from "Beowulf", the definition of a "hero" is one who comes to the aid of another despite of the outcome (conclusion i drew). In terms of such context, the Scarlet Pimpernel qualifies to be a hero since they were willing to save the Aristocrats. In this case, the rescuing is very successful. But i am curious how the story will proceed. Will a member of the scarlet pimpernel be introduced? How will the lower class deal with such association?

I don't exactly know what the background of the whole setting of Scarlet Pimpernel, but I'll just go with the novel's perspective. Since the book is depicting that the people who are being chased and hunted deserves sympathy while the 'chasers' are very cruel, I guess it is correct to say that the Scarlet Pimpernel is the hero. This is very confusing because from the chasers' perspective, those people must be guillotined because their ancestors did something wrong, and Scarlet Pimpernel is just an annoying Englishman who meddles with what must be done.

The definition of hero varies depending on the perspective, I believe. For instance, if you were Mongolian during Mongol Empire era, you would consider Ghenigis Khan as a hero. Yet if you weren't, but Korean, Chinese, Russian and many more, you would think Ghengis Khan as a horrible warrior in Mongol. So it really depends on the perspective.
When we apply this concept to the Scarlet Pimpernel, Scarlet Pimpernel may seem like a hero on the perspective of the nobles who are in danger, because Scarlet Pimpernel is helping them out to escape to England, where they can live in peace. Yet on the other hand, peasants would think that Scarlet Pimpernel is not a hero but a traitor in that he or she is letting the criminal, or someone who crushed them in the past, out to the free world where they can live in happiness again.
On the perspective of the author, author considers Scarlet Pimpernel as a hero in that he views the peasants bad, blood-thirsty beasts, and nobles with sympathy. He feels that nobles should be saved from the savages. So in his perspective, Scarlet Pimpernel is a hero.

Oh! This is hard to answer. But this is depending on which side are you standing, which means you agree the people killed the noble or you agree with the Scarlet pimpernel helps people leave from France .Let's look the background of this story why the revolution was happening in that time in Paris? From the chapter 1(p3),"for two hundred years now the people had sweated, and toiled, and starved,to keep a lustful in lavish extravagance." In my mind,I think that's the reason why they want to kill the noble so they can have freedom.Isn't it? Okay look back your question,I will say that if I stand on the French people,I may think the scarlet pimpernel is such a villain not a hero because he is trying to help French noble escape from France, other hand ,if I agree the scarlet pimpernel's activity, which means for the noble probably think that the scarlet pimpernel is a hero who saves my life.In my thoughts,I am standing on the scarlet pimpernel. He is a hero because I don't think carry out the revenge is a good way.

I think it is really hard to give a "right" answer. But I think that defining a hero in a story can be really subjective. Like you said, for the peasants who suffered from the presence of the nobles, Scarlett Pimpernel should be a villain because he's saving those that the peasants have grudge on. On the other hand, for the nobles, Scarlett Pimpernel should be a hero and someone that they absolutely depend on. I think a hero is a person who resolves a major conflict that the author comes up with. But in reality, he or she might not meet a certain criteria to deserve that title since no one can be perfectly moral every time.
