I don't know about you guys, but I personally do not like Ophelia. I don't think she truly loves Hamlet. She does not resist when her father tells her to break up with him, and does not seem to sympathize with Hamlet. Just wanted to listen to your thoughts on her...

I wouldn't say Ophelia did a good job, but I would respect her for "trying"to care for Hamlet and stay beside him. Let's think in Ophelia's shoes. You have a boyfriend/girlfriend you've been dating for a long time and suddenly he/she turns crazy. I would break up immediately if I was Ophelia. However, Ophelia still worried about Hamlet's mental state even after he turned weird. In fact, I don't like Hamlet for using his girlfriend as sort of a tool for his revenge.

I personally agree with what hansoo said. Because with someone that has dated for long term periods, when your boyfriend or girlfriend starts to go crazy you wouldn't break up immediately. The main reason will be, because you were together for such long time you would try to know to cause or why your partner has gone crazy.

I think Ophelia is the true victim in this play. She is less likely to disobey her father due to the gender role during her time. She was also used by both her father and her boyfriend…. She's just being tossed around like an object; therefore her imminent madness is predictable.

I actually don't like how Hamlet treats Ophelia. Hamlet uses her as part of her plan and just acts like he loves her. Ophelia, as Justin mentioned, has to obey her father because of the gender role at the time. She has no choice but to break up with Hamlet. But the fact that Hamlet uses Ophelia as an object makes me pity her more.

Let's think if we were born in Ophelia's period. There are so many roles that we need to follow, like the gender role.I think she truly loves Hamlet because if she did not love him,why after they broke up she also turned to crazy?why she acts weird. In her period,we have to obey whatever we parents say so think about Ophelia's situation.

I think Ophelia was just too pure and innocent and that's why she believed and listened to her father. I feel so sorry for Ophelia because her boyfriend, Hamlet turned crazy and then her father, Polonius was killed. Also she was used as a tool by her father and boyfriend.

I probably think Ophelia loves Hamlet, they know each other for long time ago and they grow up together. Hamlet takes advantage of her but he still loves her. She also try to believe Hamlet even he was crazy.

I also think Ophelia was the true victim of this story. She was used by Polonius as a tool, had to listen to her father (because of gender roles), and had to endure mental pain when Hamlet became mad (especially when he criticized her to go to nunnery). It makes sense for her to go crazy and commit suicide.

I disagree. I think she truly love Hamlet as certainly her committing suicide would imply that she felt she had no options when she had lost him. I also think if you look at the song she sings just before her death, the suggestion is that she is describing what actually happened to her, that is, she slept with him, which was a really drastic step for a girl of her position and social status to take.

I think Ophelia is just victim of this story because she did not took huge part but she died in the story. Also she didn't do any bad things like Claudius but still she was dead and her father was dead. So I think she is just victim of this tragedy.

I wouldn't say that I dislike her, but I rather pity her. Sure, there are women like her who have a hard time thinking for themselves and are somewhat over-obedient to their parents, but I don't think that's something that I can judge upon. And in either way, she is being manipulated by both her father and Hamlet for their own personal needs. She is simply a poor victim in my eyes.

I think her obedience toward her her father is greater than her love toward Hamlet. Thus she acted ambiguously, and finally died. In my personal note, she is the most pitiful figure in the Hamlet..

I agree with you that ophelia did not truly loved hamlet. If she loved Hamlet, she wouldn't do what Polonius told her. she followed what her dad said. she just died because her father died. she just love her family more.

As far as I am concerned, she is a misery. She never have her own mind and her father make all decision for her. She seem like a modern teenager in today's society. Parents decide which university theri children should go instead of letting them decide by themselves. I think she suicide finally because she do not have a strong heart. When her father died, she is over too.
