Hey guys, what can you learn about the culture from what you have read so far? For me, I realized that men are dominant in Denmark during this time. Ophelia calls Polonius "lord" , not "father" and Hamlet is pretty sexist and it stems from his disgust at his mother's sexuality. I think men definitely have more power than women. What else did you guys find?

I figured that marriage between different social hierarchy or status is very uncommon. After reading through Ophelia's father talking to her, I could clearly see their challenges and dilemma in marrying Hamlet who ranks above their class.

I found that Denmark once fought with Norway and Poland, had burial system, used Christianity as an official religion, had astronomy, regarded mourning as unmanly, educated some people in university, had a monarchy that is not blood-related (contrary to the fact that son becomes next king), had overseas studying opportunity, had unique drinking culture, had witchcraft, and had posset as a traditional drink.

I found that there is social hierarchy at that time in Denmark and it is hard to marry with someone at the other status.

I found out that in some cases, it wasn't so unnatural for marriages to occur within families, especially among those of upper class. This was most common when it came to deciding who will take the throne after the death of a former king.

I saw a very strict social hierarchy system. Religion was a must thing to have for everybody. I've seen some sexism going on when Ophelia was given advices from her brother. Also, it wasn't uncommon to see people getting married within families. Denmark was appeared to be one of the strongest countries in the world. Men definitely had more power than women.

for my part of scene. they told me that how prince and king is important and how they have to behave. Hamlet had huge responsibilities for himself and his kingdom. he cant chose what he want. he have to chose what the whole world want.

We can see so far that religion is a big thing, especially Christianity. Also men is the prior gender, and women obey men. I also found it interesting how people at that time accepted the marriage between family members. Today, this is just crazy and everyone would talk bad about it, but it was normal to them back then. Hamlet was mad about his mother and uncle, but I think Hamlet is mad because his mom married his uncle right away, not because she married a family member.

I think we can learn a lot about their religion and their faith through this play. Their religious belief was Christianity and they seemed to have deep faith in their religion. They also believed that if one is forgiven for his sins before death they might be able to enter heaven.

I learned that putting poison into someone's ear is one of the various methods of killing people. The methods of killing people included shooting an arrow, stabbing with sword, etc.

One of the cultures of the time was that people generally married within their own classes, and members of the royal family were only allowed to marry other nobles. Ophelia was not high enough of status to marry Hamlet, since he had to marry for political reasons.
