As some of you may know the new topic for this quarter is "What is a Hero?" And I thought it would be good to have a little talk about what we think about heroes. So I wanted to ask you guys what is your own definition of a hero? How do you define it and why?
As for me, a hero is someone who is willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others. To abandon their own beliefs and desires for others safety and liberty. I believe that a hero should be willing and able to stand up against violence and the things that are morally wrong without hesitation. Sacrifice,I think, is key. For any record of a hero, or even a fictional epic, the hero always shows a character of sacrifice or even a willingness of sacrifice for a greater good. Often war heroes are depicted as heroes of our time for their sacrifice for protecting us and our well-being. Moral rights, and justice is hard to define, and differs a lot from culture to culture and person to person. So above everything that a hero might have, sacrifice or a willingness to sacrifice is key. And finally, sacrifice is not easy, a willingness to let go of ones own desire and perhaps even happiness is a violation of our own natural system of defense, and our natural desire for self happiness.
Well these are my thoughts how about yours?

In many movies and book, heroes are praised and respected by their strength, intelligent and courage. Mostly people think the person is the person who kill the evils to protect the world is the true hero. But I higher rate the scarification of the people whose sacrifices their lives to help him get to the final purpose. In my opinion, scarification is most important trait that a hero must have. They always can push everything to aside and do what is best for others.

I think hero is the ideal of own people and it can be anything. Every single person have their own thinking what they want to be and it is different. That is why each person have their own hero.

In my opinion, Hero is a person who likes to help someone as a volunteer. Also A parson who likes doing something hard like everyone doesn't wanna do things can be a hero.

I really agree with Jooyoung that sacrifice and willingness to let go of one's opinion is hard and they are major keys to be a hero. Yet I think compassion is another key to be a hero. For instance, if one doesn't feel sympathy toward the others, he or she will be reluctant to offer sacrifice and get rid of his or her beliefs. Thus to make a sacrifice, compassion is one of the key requirements. This idea is also supported in a novel that we are studying right now, Beowulf. He felt pity for the people who died in Denmark, and offered his help. Of course he wanted to brag about his ability, but he also had compassion toward the king and people in the city.
I also believe that great heroes have gratitude toward everything, especially something related to lives. For example, heroes will be willing to sacrifice their lives for others because they know that others' lives are precious as well. Heroes should often be thankful for their lives as well. Even though sacrifice is important, the hero should love his or her life as well. Without caring for his life, I think the hero can't really save anyone, and spread happiness.

It is really interesting to share our thoughts on a same topic.
To me, hero is a someone or even something that realizes your wish or hope. Everyone has his or her ideal form of the world. However, it is fairly difficult to move our thoughts into actions because of certain conditions such as social status, finance, or family. By seeing someone who makes our hopes come true, no matter what they are, we feel catharsis. Not only do we feel catharsis, but also earn courage that we can one day do the same thing because the HERO proves us anyone can. In other words, hero brings vicarious satisfaction.

I think hero is someone who helps people without getting any profit. For example, in the movie superman he never get paid or reward from others but he still helps public or world to be safe. Not just helping is hero but someone who gives hope to people is hero too. These days there are a lot of little heroes like when there is disaster, people who volunteer that help victim is hero too. Also hero is people that do not ignore weak people but respect and help them.

Many words can describe what a hero is, but what is the real meaning of a hero actually? For most, a hero is someone who has contributed something useful to society and he/she can also be a model for others. It’s very noble to be a hero. Many heroes even sacrifice themselves to maintain and defend something.

For me, a hero is someone who helps me, cares about me, and encourages me all the time! For society, a hero is someone who tries to make the environment better by doing volunteers such as fund-rasing, cleaning the road by picking garbages, etc and also someone who develops the world by inventing the new technologies or discovering something really important for human. However, in my opinion, anyone in the world can be a hero. Hero does not have to be super strong and powerful, or good looking like Iron man or super man. If one is special to someone, then one already is a hero <3

A hero is someone who is very strong, can fly, and smart. Using these characteristics, a hero can save people's lives. A hero also needs to keep justice and be moral. A hero cannot have a job because he or she needs to be there when someone needs help. If you guys noticed, the definition of a hero to me is ones like Super Man, Bat Man, Iron Man, and many more. I agree to the previous post that say that a hero can be someone who is special to someone else. However, I do not want to necessarily put that as my definition of a hero because that is not the image I have in my head right now.

I agree with your idea that heroes often sacrifice and are willing to do so for the sake of other people. Heroes therefore inspire and motivate people because their brave and great character is very desirable. I believe there can be a lot of different heroes. There the Marvel and the Justice league super heroes, who we all love. There are great leaders and heroes in history, such as Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and etc, who were brave enough to take actions to improve the society. But even like a person who possibly helps an old lady in a subway can be a hero in that he or she does so for the sake of her. When most of the people think of heroes, they think of famous people that are known to everybody, but I think there are heroes that exist in this society that participates in improving our world.

My definition of a hero is someone who has the guts to stand up for others and is willing to sacrifice their own time to help people. I don't necessarily think that all heroes should be physically strong but I think that one has to have a strong mentality and will in order to stand firm instead of breaking down like most people would in many tough situations. I also feel like if someone did at least one heroic gesture in their life, they are considered somewhat of a hero because its not easy to step up and do something that might be physically or emotionally a threat to you.

I think a hero is someone who makes sacrifices in order to bring the better good against the bad. Heroes are people who are supposed to support the people in need. they don't just need to be people who fights against against villains like how superman fights. They can help does in need and try to bring peace without violence. There are various kind of heroes and various ways people perceive who are heroes like Martin Luther King Jr. or Gandhi. People who are respected that done deeds how good are deserved to be called "Heroes"

i think superpowered heroes are overrated. I think its more important for a hero to have strength of mind or spirit, because even if they can bench press a thousand pounds or whatever, if they don't have the mental strength that separates a hero from they ordinary people, they can never go through and finish the task that makes them a hero. I also don't think that you have to be perfect to be a hero either. You can have insecurities and self doubt but still do the right thing. Actually, that's it. I think a hero is someone who does the right thing no matter what the cost.
