I think a hero is someone who would do good for someone else, it doesn't have to big a big thing as long as it helps someone you are already a hero. I don't really like how heroes are being characterized nowdays, like superman, batman..they are all characterized as strong, hansome, good body proportions, it makes kids/people think that they have to reach a certain standard(to be buff and good looking) to be a hero and that is wrong. -agnes

As some of you may know the new topic for this quarter is "What is a Hero?" And I thought it would be good to have a little talk about what we think about heroes. So I wanted to ask you guys what is your own definition of a hero? How do you define it and why? As for me, a hero is someone who is willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others. To abandon their own beliefs and desires for others safety and liberty. I believe that a hero should be willing and able to stand up against violence and the things that are morally wrong without hesitation. Sacrifice,I think, is key. For any record of a hero, or even a fictional epic, the hero always shows a character of sacrifice or even a willingness of sacrifice for a greater good. Often war heroes are depicted as heroes of our time for their sacrifice for protecting us and our well-being. Moral rights, and justice is hard to define, and differs a lot from culture to culture and person to person. So above everything that a hero might have, sacrifice or a willingness to sacrifice is key. And finally, sacrifice is not easy, a willingness to let go of ones own desire and perhaps even happiness is a violation of our own natural system of defense, and our natural desire for self happiness. Well these are my thoughts how about yours? For me, a hero is someone who can be helpful to others or who supports the minors. Hero doesn't always have to be like a superman catching a flying car Godzilla threw. Even youngsters who help old neighbors can be a hero.

As it seems like most people agree with your opinion, i am going to do the same thing. I kinda agree with the fact that heros often sacrifice themselves for the sake of the others, and i guess it is based on most of the films we watch.. Anyways, on the other hand, i dont think it is ALWAYS necessary to expect heros to give up their own to help others. The real definition of hero is that hero is a brave person who can do what a normal person cannot do.. So i guess imma say that heros do things that others wont even try to do because they are not brave enough, and most heros sacrifise themselves for the sake of others.

I totally agree with you on definition of a hero and that being hero is all about sacrifices and helping the others in need. In every book and movie that we love heroes are portrayed as a figure that is willing to do anything to protect people, even if it might cost his or her life. Every kid dreams to be a superhero someday and in our real world superheroes also do exist just not as flashy as they are shown on the screens. For some people, superhero is just someone who holds them up in harsh times or someone who is willing to spend a little time to have a coffee with a friend. The point is that there is not hero with a little sacrifice.

As far as I am concerned, I think a hero should be a person who has power, ability or intelligence and save people by defeating the bad people.Like we all know, superman, ironman and otherman(those hero) all have special ability to fight. Finally, they win their ability and emphasize one important characterize of one person. In modern world, there are also some normal people becoming a hero. Some disabled peopel use their example to encourage others to work hard. I think that is hero too.

Reading the posts above, almost all possible answers that define a hero are taken…. but i'm going to answer this question with ideas from "Beowulf". I noticed (or guess..) that certain parts of the story contain the definition of a hero from the standpoint of the author/culture.
“The hero arose, surrounded closely by his powerful thanes.”p.50 It is a random quote, but focus on the word "hero". This quote was taken before the Geats did anything to help. Maybe the author is suggesting that a hero can be defined by one who comes to the aid of another despite the outcome. In this case, the Geat didn't kill Grendel yet, not did they come up with a plan. However, the story did mention that they came full hearted and willing to help.
“From now on sailors would be safe, the deep-sea raids were over for good.”p.53 Before this quote, one drunk guy assumed that the Beowul was killing beast to boast about their strength and to have fun. Beowulf justified himself and mentioned that he and his brothers killed off sea monsters in gruesome battles, which ultimately brought safety and peace to sailors. Therefore, heroes could slaughter and kill monsters and beast, but they don't do so without means of bringing peace.
!! omg double entry thingy helped !! grabbed two quotes i wanted right away :DDD

I think heroes are basically people who are willing to put their own safety at risk for the safety of others. So one of the most common examples that can be found among the jobs we have today would be a fire fighter. They literally put their lives at risk just to save those who are in danger. Everyone rejoices when they succeed in doing their job but there are times when they fail and a good soul is lost. A hero can't be a hero although he or she saves other people if he or she is not in harms way. Those kind of people can simply be said as nice people. It's a whole different matter to put your own life on the line and that it what makes the difference of being a hero.

The term Hero to me means someone who would willingly sacrifice himself/herself for other people. They help others in needs. People admire them because of his/her sacrifices and bravery. Heroes stand up for the truth no matter what. They don't need to possess 'perfect' physical characteristics. Soldiers who fought in wars for the sake of our countries are heroes. Teachers, doctors. Heroes exist in many different forms.

The word "hero" could be defined in different ways since every people have different thoughts. But for me, heroes are people who can do bravery acts for someone who is in danger. The dangerous situation does not have to be a situation where a person is about to die, but it could be like a very tiny danger. Everyone could be a hero since they can always help other people. If someone donated little bit of money to a poor people in Africa, then that could an act of "hero". That little money can still give the poor people happiness.

Definition of Hero personally for me is someone that stands for the justice. Justice can be defined by many ways, but for me it would be the "right". It is true that hero sacrifices things to save others or help others, but like you see in movies or any sort of literature heroes make choices and those choices can help others, but if you take a look at the shadow it harms others, which means to some people the person or group of people can be hero, but to others it can be villain. The heroes we see in movies with super power are very hyperbole.

In my opinion, not only famous people who accomplished great tasks or sacrificed their lives are heroes, but also ordinary people. Most people in the world have their own occupations and tend to sacrifice their own time to serve other people. For example, teachers help students thrive in their academics; students study hard in order to contribute to the world; doctors cure people who have injury or disease; parents feed, give love, and motivate their children to become successful in the future; soldiers fight in order to protect people from danger; chefs cook food in order to feed people, etc. All these people have opportunities to enjoy their leisure time, but they are willingly to sacrifice to serve other people in the world.

I believe that a hero is someone who stands out in a positive way in society. He/she does not have to be successful in what they do, as long as they can be a role model for somebody, they can be considered a hero.

Many people imagine hero as a "superhero", someone like Superman...or Batman. However, to me, a hero doesn't have to be someone who is worldwide famous. A hero can be special to even one person. Hero is someone who helps someone when they are in need. Example, if a person has a cat stuck in a tree, can't get it down, and someone comes in and helps the cat down, then to that person, that someone is a hero. Or, a person giving a homeless person help...to that homeless person, that person is his/her hero. Just like a lot of us here, heroes are people who knows how to sacrifice to help someone instead of themselves.

And now that I've read everyone else's response, I can give my own definition of a hero.
For me, a hero does not have to be someone who is extraordinary or outstanding. I would say that my opinion is similar to Amelia's. In my opinion, what is more important is not some sort of superpower or great achievements, but a quality or characteristic that makes other people admire that hero. However, there is one thing that bothers me. If a person did something that would be considered as 'heroic' to others, can that action be considered as heroic to everyone else? What I mean is, a hero may not be everyone's hero. Kinda sounds confusing, but I don't know how to put this into words in a better way.

To me, hero is a brave person who saves people from danger and sacrifices himself/herself to improve a society. Usually hero is respected by people because his/her accomplishments give hope to others. Hero is moral and usually stands up against wrong ideas/system/etc. I think anyone can be a hero and does not have to have special skills.
