Level 9, which is the lowest circle in the inferno, is called betrayal. Most of the punishment deals with ice. There are 4 circles within level 9. They are called Caïna, Antenora, Ptolomaea, and Judecca. Caïna is the circle for people who betrayed their family. The soul in this circle is obviously Cain who betrayed his brother. People in this circle are buried in the ice until their chin. Antenora is the 2nd circle for people who betrayed their city or country. The soul in this circle is Antenora who betrayed his country in the Trojan War. The punishment for this circle in starvation in the ice. Ptolomaea is the 3rd circle for people who betrayed his guests. The soul in this circle in Ptolomy who killed his guests after inviting them. The punishment is burial in ice except the face. Last circle is called Judecca, and it is designed for people who betrayed God. The soul in this circle is Judas who betrayed god. The punishment for those kind of people are burial in the ice, from head to toe.

To add on to this, Satan is the boss of level 9. It has three heads. The left and right head bites on Cassius and Brutus from Julius Caesar. The middle head bites on Judecca, meaning that he committed the worst sin among others. Also, the punishment, by which the people in level 9 are frozen in ice, gets more severe depending on the severity of betrayal ( greater number the circle, deeper a person is into the ice).

as mentioned during class, Dante includes the sub level of Ptolomaea, where people who doesn't treat their guests well go to. We can infer that in this culture, guests and hospitality are seen as one of the most important aspect. Since Ptolomaea is a historical figure that invited his neighbors over to his house and killed them all. As a result he was sent to this level of hell (9, betrayal).
