Another topic that we discussed in class was whether chaste is part of human nature. Is it in our inborn instinct to remain chaste or is it simply a virtue?
I personally think that this is more of a virtue than part of human nature. Not only is it in our survival instinct (human nature) to reproduce ourselves purely in the interest of continuing our race, but we also have our natural sexual desire, lust. It is so common and a problem in our society that we are consistently taught in our schools, especially around the age of puberty, to be able to control our sexual desires. So if lust is part of human nature, then wouldn't the complete opposite, chaste, be the opposite of human nature, thus virtue? To be able to suppress our desires has been long seen as a virtue since it requires much effort and determination. So chaste, I'd say, would be more of a virtue.
