Reading the novel Scarlet Pimpernel, I figured out that the novel is pretty much similar to the book Escape from the Camp 14 that we read last year. I remember doing my final project on that! The descriptions were very vivid but it was an interesting book.
I found a connection between Scarlet Pimpernel and Escape from Camp 14 because both novels contain the refugees who are escaping from one nation. In the case of Scarlet Pimpernel, the nobilities are escaping from France in order to avoid their deaths. On the other hand, in the Escape from Camp 14, the protagonist, along with other people, try to escape from North Korea, seeking for security and freedom. Another comparison is that both of them succeeds in escaping; the protagonist in the Escape from Camp 14 arrives safely in South Korea, while many nobilities in the Scarlet Pimpernel arrives in England.
Difference is that in the Scarlet Pimpernel, the rich people, or the nobilities, are escaping from peasants while in Escape from Camp 14, the peasants are escaping from the nobilities.
So this was my connection to the Escape from the Camp 14. What connections can you make with the novel Scarlet Pimpernel?

Scarlett Pimpernel reminded me of Robinhood for some reason. Both are similar in that they save people and are considered as heroes whose background is England. However, they are also different in that Scarlett Pimpernel saves the wealthy nobles and hides his identity like Batman or Spiderman (another connection there) while Robinhood saves poor people. Another similarity that comes from this fact is that both can be considered evil to some people in the story. Scarlett Pimpernel can be evil to peasants who hold grudge on the corrupted wealthy nobles while Robinhood can be considered evil to the nobles, who are the victims of thefts that he commits. There's always connections that can be easily made especially in a heroic literature.

My connection when I read Scarlet Pimpernel is The Knife of Never Letting Go. This book was one of the book I read last year for Ms. Boyd class. This book came to my mind when I first thought of connecting this novel to different novel, because The Knife of Never Letting Go is story of young man escaping from his own society, which is society full of only men and they know everything about each other, not because they told everything about each other, but because they can read each other's mind and thoughts do to series of diseases they have. In this story clearly there is a character similar to Scarlet Pimpernel. The society in this story really depends either you are adult or not, and the main character is suppose to become adult, but by this one accident he gets in a situation to run away. Later on near to the end he find out in order to become adult he has to kill one of the adults. Here is where character that reminds me of Scarlet Pimpernel comes in, who was the first adult that tried to kill the main character in the beginning of the story. This was my connection to Scarlet Pimpernel.

Well Im not so sure if I can make the same connection like you did Lin, because I was one of the few in tenth grade who did not read the Camp 14. But I can indeed make connections to Scarlet Pimpernel.
I thought of all the texts, movies and history that I learned about the French Revolution. In most of the stories, the Revolution is viewed as a noble act for democracy, identity, and freedom. The movie "Les miserable" gave me such an impression. Even the song in the movie, "Do you hear the people sing", all represent and glorify the great revolution. However, the Scarlet Pimpernel describes the revolution as somewhat barbaric and uncontrollable. A quite a surprise forme actually.

I can connect the Scarlet Pimpernel to a historical event: Harriet Tubman during the 1800s when slavery was a common practice. Harriet Tubman was boring into slavery and bought her freedom through painstaking work. However, she easily empathizes with other slaves and decided to work as an agent of the Under Ground Rail Road. Every time she goes back to the plantation to rescue, the higher risk she is putting herself into. Underground Rail Road = The Scarlet Pimpernel (analogy)~ Both the story and the historical event consists of the oppressed and the oppressor. However in the Scarlet Pimpernel the oppressors ended up the ones being rescued.

The Scarlet Pimpernel reminded me of Oskar Schindler. He was a German businessman who helped Jewish people during the time when the holocaust was going on under Hitler's rule. He helps by providing a place to stay, food and clothing, and fake identities to use when taking trains heading outside of Germany, fooling the guards. He's similar to the Scarlet Pimpernel in that he helped people escape from those who are trying to kill them. A difference would be that Schindler was more exposed to the public. He wasn't a secret identity or anything. The Jews knew who they were being saved by. Still, both are admirable in the fact that they risked their lives to help to save others'.

I too thought that The Scarlet Pimpernel was very similar to Escape from Camp 14. Both novels' major theme is escaping from one country to another. So, when I was reading Scarlet P., I was able to connect it to Camp 14 a lot. Also, the story reminded me of Harriet Tubman, as Justin mentioned. Harriet Tubman risked her life several times like the Scarlet P. and went to save lives of the slaves through the Underground Railroad.

If i were to just simply think of any connection between the scarlet pimpernel and any other literatures, the first thing that comes out is the les miserable. The reason is that simply, they both deals with the french revolution. On the contrary though, in le mis, they solely show what happened to regular/poor people of french whereas in the scarlet pimpernel it described massacres of the aristocrats.

I really really find that the book is completely similar the movie Schindler's list. In this movie a German named Schindler, who is rich and powerful, tries his best to save as many Jews he can from the hands of the Nazzis just like the Scarlett Pimpernel from the French revolutionists. Schinlder is the owner of the escalator company and let the Jewish escapees earn a living by working in his company.
