Acceptance comes from not only the physical but the emotional side of us. I think that in order for humans like us to feel "fit-in" to a group or a circle of friends or family, one has to feel the connection either physically or emotionally, often both. I think that once these conditions are not met, one will feel lonely even when there are people around that person. Lack of communication among feeling, or proximity issues due to physical separation, and much more all these things can play a vital role on whether or not one feels loneliness even around people.

In my opinion, yes, a person can be lonely even if there are people around him. For instance, some people have a lot of facebook friends but don't have real friends. Because they have social life only on internet, they never meet others in the real life and finally feel loneliness.

even though a person has lots of people around, he/ she can feel lonely when the people around dont have anything in common, or if they dont have good relationship.

Even if you're surrounded by a lot of people, you can still feel lonely if you can't express yourself comfortably around these people. You'd probably feel lonely if you were surrounded by people who have no shared interests with you.

A person can still feel lonely around others if he does not consider them as people he is familiar with or he knows. For example, if you're a new student to school, you do not know anyone there. You see everyone talking to each other, laughing about, but you feel lonely because you do not know any of them. It doesn't matter about that there are people around you, but who those people are.

I have same thinking. People feel loneliness even though there are other people around specially if that person is unusual or different from others.

I think a person can feel lonely if there are no one who shares same or similar idea. It's similar to Brandon's opinion. I had that time in elementary school, when I had many friends yet there weren't anyone who could understand what I was thinking. It felt lonely even though I was surrounded with people.

I think a person can be lonely in a group of people when they realize people don't mean about caring for him/her. People would talk to them and react to them, but all those might be just for being nice. When the person realizes this, he or she might feel lonely.

And trust also plays a big part on this, especially if you are a shy person..once you trust a person you'll feel more connected and open to that person and you wont feel uncomfortable being yourself with them.

I agree with you that people can be surrounded by other people, yet still feel socially isolated and lonely.I think the reason why people feel lonely is because maybe there is no one thinks the way as him/her and also her/him personality is quite, shy, that makes much harder to speak out his/her own opinions.

Being surrounded by so called friends doesn't mean much in today society, this is because many of us do something called SNS. Any internet related social websites or any social communication apps such as Facebook, twitter, etc. are the main causes of this loneliness we feel. We all have many friends overloading in our friend list on this SNS, but in reality only few of them we know person to person and we meet every day and talk everyday, We made our situation in to this. We stopped talking to each other because of this technological innovation and because of this technological innovation that is so called making communication better caused us to cut our communication with people that actually cares about us.

I think people feel lonely even when they are around other people because they lack connection. But even if I'm around people that I am comfortable with, I often feel lonely at times. But I don't think it's because i'm missing something from other people, it's because i'm missing something from myself. So I believe we can improve on not feeling lonely by knowing ourselves better.

There is one famous story in Chinese history that one famous artist only play the instrument for his special friend who could understand the music very well. He is also considered the best player at that time. However, when his friend dead, he abandoned playing that kind of instrument again because he think that no one could understand him. I think this example could best explain why people feel alone when they are around by people becsuae there is no peopel who can really understand them arounf them so they feel alone.
