To begin with, I think the author is saying that the clown initially wanted to entertain people, but that clown became miserable when people thought he was stupid and silly. So I think the message is that we should not misinterpret others. What are your thoughts?
(Below are my annotations that led me to think this way)
The word clown and punk have contradictory meanings:
Clowns are meant to entertain people, whereas punk shows negative meaning (such as criminal).
So, I thought that it will be about a clown who had some criminal record.
Shonky is slang for poor quality.
three times out of ten indicates that it is unlikely to see the clown
.
I was not sure whether that clown was in that specific town.
like a basket of washing shows homelessness and shabbiness (according to the video), but to me, it reminded me of lifeless, limp form
.
A town clown that got up (like a basket of washing) showed grogginess to me.
I questioned "why would the author use towing instead of carrying"?
But is enjambment (1. ending the line in the middle of sentence 2. continuation of sentence without pause)
.
I thought that the clown was threatened when I saw shot through
.
Indelible means making marks that cannot be removed
.
shot through with indelible ink might represent that the clown was threatened by media or that people think the clown is silly.
traffic lights give a clue that the setting is in a city
.
think what he'll look like in thirty years' time shows transition from negativeness to sarcasm and more negativeness.
deflated and shrunken indicate that the clown is aging and losing power
.
daubed means smeared (from video)
.
I asked myself why the clown was daubed with the sad tattoos
.
I had no idea what high punk was
.
kids were either in a car, theater, circus, or somewhere in a city based on back seat
.
I was not sure whether wince and scream was joy or pain
.
slather also means smear
.
daft means stupid
.
I was not sure what the mush was (probably reputation)
.
dyed means to change color
.
I thought that the clown initially wanted to amuse people but it later made people to believe that he/she is stupid and silly
.
then picture windscreen wipers, and let it rain might advise the clown to forget about the bad reputation and be optimistic
.
This poem is both Sonnet (with AABBCC rhyme format) and Quatrain (stanza of four lines with rhyme).
The attitude of the narrator was never positive.
