Gluttony
Definition of Gluttony: Over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste. Early Church leader said 5 ways in which you can commit gluttony: Eating too soon/ or at an inappropriate time, too expensively/ luxurious, exotic, too much, too eagerly, too daintily/elaborately prepared. It’s not just about food, but over-indulgence over other wealth items as well. Guardian of Gluttonous level: In this third circle of hell, you can find Cerberus, the guard dog of the Underworld. He is three-headed dog with a serpent's tail, a mane of snakes, and a lion's claws. So, why is here? It’s because he is a glutton too. When Dante and Virgil came to this circle of hell, the Cerberus tried to stop them/threatened them. But Virgil picked up a handful of stinking mud and threw into Cerberus’ jaws. The dog actually ate it and left. That’s why he fits for this guard of hell. One of the sinners can be found here is named Ciacco. Ciacco is said to be a pig's name, hence he was called this way for his gluttony. He’s also the one who told Dante and Virgil about the first political prophecy which is: the Guelphs (a fraction supporting the Pope) will defeat the Ghibellines (a fraction supporting the Emperor). He seemed nice, well respected and claimed to have met Dante in before life. Dante seemed to pity him for his horrible condition now. Condition: The condition in this circle of hell is a really gruesome, disgusting place. It’s really cold. It constantly rains. Not pure water, either, but filthy polluted stinky rain, black snow and hailstones. That’s why there’s slushy mud all over the place. Punishment: Based on the condition, sinners in this circle of Hell are punished by being forced to lie in a vile slush that is produced by never ending icy rain. The sinners here are so traumatized by this rain that they turn back and forth, trying unsuccessfully to keep some part of their body clean and dry. Because you consumed in excess, you meet your fate beneath the cold, dirty rain, among the other souls that there lay unhappily in the stinking mud. The vile slush symbolizes personal degradation of one who overindulges in food, drink and other worldly pleasures, while the inability to see others lying nearby represents the gluttons’ selfishness, coldness and emptiness in their lives.
