In the story, Grendel lived in a dark, cold cave alone, and every night he heard the Danes celebrating enjoyable in Herot. That drived him very mad with rage and envy, then he attacked Herot and slaughtered many Danes.
What would you do if you were Grendel??? Would you just kill people like Grendel did?
If I were Grendel, I would try to be friend with people instead of mardering them. Even though if people attack me because they are scared, I won't be killed by them since I am reaaally strong. It would take time, but I think people would understand me that I want to become their friend, if I keep being nice and helpful to them.

Thinking in Grendel's perspective, I would understand how furious and lonely he would be when everyone celebrated EVERYDAY. Grendel probably wanted to be involved in those 'carpe diem' activities, but he couldn't. However, I don't think it was right for him to go around and violently kill the people who had fun. I would just leave the place or talk to them somehow and then use violence if they tried to kill me because I was a monster. I believe killing people is not reasonable and moral, unless they have a 'good' reason. I don't think this case is the 'good reason' to kill the innocent ones who were just partying by themselves.

I think that I would be just like Grendel if I was to live in a dark cave and was the descendant of a being that killed his own sibling. People will fear the appearance anyway, so why shrink down and let the people kill you. I would rather kill the opponent before they have the chance of killing me first. I think that if I were to kill a person, then I would do it so that the victim wouldn't feel any pain and have a quick death without suffer.

Well based on Grendel's character in this story and the fact that he was born from the evil and lived as evil. He had no choice, but to kill. Also Grendel symbolizes the minority that have been ostracized by the society. This shows he couldn't get along with people of Danes, not because he didn't wan't to get along, because people of Danes didn't accept him in the society. So if I was Grendel I would have still slaughtered many Danes, because Grendel is evil, and he is jealous of everything they have been doing.

Well, Grendel, according to the story, is again, as Stephen stated, born from evil and lived in the evil. So I guess that he had this natural desire to kill and raise havoc among people. He loathed parties, the mead hall and people gathering. Perhaps he was just acting like a teenage boy in puberty, but the story as a whole suggests, that Grendel was motivated by a more inner desire. So I think that even when I am Grendel, I would still have that initial hatred and cause chaos just like him.

Knowing where Grendel came from makes it impossible for him to be something different from what he actually was. He is descendant of Cane, evil that produced another evil. Grendel is pumped with hate and anger, he has nothing else beside them, he was never familiar with things such as friends, kindness, help, etc. it' just not in his nature. Killing people is his way of living his life just like for us having fun and doing our daily chores. I don't think Grendel would even pick different lifestyle because killing and murdering people was his whole life.

As an important theme of the poem, identity which means the background and the personal characterization will strongly affect the character. Grendel,as a monster himself have lived in rage and loneliness who also is the descendant of merciless Cain and son of a bloodthirsty monster. Thus, it makes sense to what he have done. I don't think we can't feel the same way that he did to take actions in our perspective.... Also, if he does not do so ... maybe we won't have to study Beowulf

If I'm Grendel...I might be jealous people but I am not going to kill people. Grendel kill people because of his personal reason. In this poem Beowulf is a hero. If there is a hero, there is a evil also. Evil is do what we should not do. That is why Grendel is a like symbol of evil.

I kind of disagree with Jooyoung and Stephen because I don't think that one can be born to be evil. I think every creatures have dual sides. So I think Grendel must have some nice part in his character. For instance, Grendel's mom is 'evil from the nature' yet she loves her child. This is maternal love that isn't evil; maternal love is great and precious. So I think there must be some part in Grendel that is benevolent.
I believe that if I were Grendel, I would kill people too. I'm pretty sure Grendel wanted to fit in and enjoy with others. Yet others thought he was born to be evil, due to his personality and appearance. He was a monster that people feared. So even if Grendel was nice, benevolent and more, his appearance might prevented him from conforming into normality in that people feared him and were disgusted by him. I think Grendel must have tried to fit in yet people just didn't accept him as a part of the group. In this case, Grendel was mad at people for ostracizing him.
But I still believe that killing or murdering is bad, in that we have no right to control one's life and fate. Grendel, no matter what's his reason for the murder, had committed many crimes.

If I was Grendel, I would also try to go out and try to fit in to those people who celebrates everyday. Although Grendel is "evil", I believe that everyone has the kind part deep inside them. I would not start killing everyone and try to approach to those people. Although those people would not accept him at first, I think as times flies, they will try to accept Grendel since they are the same humankind.

I would not kill. I would just attack, so that they will be scared of me, & they would just go away, or be quiet. I would not kill them, because murder is absolutely wrong. Why kill when you can just get revenge in another way?

The most normal answer would probably be anything but kill them, but I guess the author needed a bad guy and that's why he made Grendel. But if I were to ignore all that, if were Grendel, I would've went to the party first, peacefully. I would've went up to Hrothgar and question why he didn't invite me. From there, if they welcome me to the party, I would've just enjoyed my time. But if not, then I would've turned into a party-pooper and ruined the whole party. Who are they to have fun without me when I'm alone in my muddy home? If I can't have fun, I might as well make sure that anyone else can't either (at least the ones that openly show that they're having fun in my face).

So far in the story, the only reason why Grendel is feared of is because of the destruction he brings to the nation. However, the reason why Grendel is doing so is that he can't stand the site of people celebrating and enjoying their time while he suffers from loneliness. If i were Grendel i would, first of all, stop killing people. If Grendel was a harmless monster, getting along with the humans will be a way easier task. Now that Grendel's reputation is marred, it will take him more time to compensate for his crime. Besides getting along with the humans, i wonder why don't Grendel spend time with other monsters? The story did mention about demons and dragons. So why can't Grendel spend time with those who are "similar" to him. Is this behavior suggesting a symbolism? Grendel wants to be on the "good" side?

Grendel as a negative role, he is sacry and pathetic, he hate "party" thing he don't like another people when they feeling happy. Grendel is jealous, such like human. If I am Grendel, I don't know what should I do when I can feel another people's happiness but I can't join that and enjoy of this, but i'll not going to kill people. Now I'm not sure Grendel is a moster or human?

If I were Grendel, I would kill everyone who was partying in the mead-hall. After emptying the hall, I would then become the king of Herot and gather whoever that are deformed and have the same situation as mine. Then, I would basically rule a new kingdom of my own and ostracize the rest of the "normal people." By doing that not only I succeed in revenging but also live so happily with the people who are like me. That's a very evil way of living as Grendel but I would honestly do such things (to stay in character
