In the final scene, Gertrude died after drinking from the poisoned cup. Claudius knew she was about to drink, so he said "Gertrude, do not drink," and she responded, "I will, my lord; I pray you pardon me" What's this mean? Did she know about the poison and want to protect her son or was she just simply clueless?

I think she didnt know that the wine was poisonous. However, with the another perspective, lets say that she knew about the poison. I think she drank it because everything that happened and is happening are too much for her to bear with, so she committed suicide.

I think she knew about the poisonous drink. It was very clear that she knew. Anyone else would have known that the wine is a plan to kill Hamlet. Gertrude wasnt an ideal motherly figure throughout the whole play. She was more of a figure who is depised by every readers. So, i think the author was trying to give her an honorable death by portraying her as a motherly figure who is willing to die for her son

I think this is her confession, she want to protect her son Hamlet and she feels guilty.

I don't know how she found out that there was a poison in her drink, but I guess she probably drank it to save her child Hamlet and for some good reason that is related to her new husband, King Claudius.

I believe she was taking a stand against Claudius for the first time in the play and unforetunately for her, this was her end. , So I think that Gertrude didn't know and became the innocent victim in a plot of murder, and when yo look at the lines after that she said "O my dear Hamlet! The drink, the drink! I am poisoned" (289).

I think Gertrude already knew that poison was in the cup and she intended to drink the poison. Maybe she wanted to finish everything because she might had hard time too. So I think she knew that there was poison in the drink.

I think she may know there is posion in the drink. She loves Hamlet so much and maybe she notice that Claudius very want Hamlet drink that bottle of wine. There must be problems in that bottle. She just want to save her son.

I agree with most people that Gertrude knew the wine was poisonous. To me, it seemed that she felt guilty when Hamlet scolded her for being "incestuous" and sinful, so she tried to redeem that by ending her life with poison.

I believe Gertrude somehow knew her death coming, and did not want to avoid it. She had felt enough guilty and shame that she wanted to stop repeating by death. She somehow delivers the message to Claudius by saying, "Pardon me."

I think Gertrude was aware of what Claudius was upto the entire time. She simply did not act. Maybe after Hamlet screamed at her, she realized that what she did was actually wrong, hence drank the wine to save her son.

I think Gertrude was aware of the fact that there was poison in the wine. And I think she finally realized how things became a disaster and her decision to marry Claudius had some kind of effect on it. Gertrude should've gone through a lot emotionally after Hamlet accuses of her sin. ( the incestuous sheet & her marriage with Claudius soon after King Hamlet's death).

I think she already knew that poison was in the drink. I think she is smart because the reason she married with Claudius is not for her. I think she drink it because she wanted to protect Hamlet.

I thought that Gertrude thought that Claudius was being unreasonable. So she was all, 'yeah right Claudius, let me just drink the wine' She didn't give much thought to the fact that Claudius would poison the wine.
What i'm sort of intrigued by is that Claudius didn't seem to care all that much when Gertrude died from the poison. Did he simply see her as a means to the throne or did he actually love her? Probably the former.
