I agree with you that Hamlet was mainly responsible to her because he had said many unpleasant insults in her face, but I also think that Ophelia was also responsible for her death too because it was her fault that she committed suicide too quickly without even trying to get help from other people or overcome it by herself.

I can't blame her, taking in consideration everything that she is been through. I think tons of people would have committed suicide if they were in her shoes. Taking her own was her fault though, regardless in what kind of environment she was stuck in, at the end of the day it was her decision to commit suicide and nobody forced her to do so, besides the circumstances that she was in. My final point is that it's her fault for committing suicide but looking at people she was surrounded by makes it not really her fault.

I think Hamlet's words are harsh enough to make Ophelia suicidal. I mean come on, if somebody you really, truly love (in a girl's perspective) pushes you away and say go to a nunnery, you seriously get hurt. And especially since Ophelia is extremely innocent and pure, I think his words should've been more damaging to her.

I agree with Lin. I don't think it is one specific person's fault that drove Ophelia insane and made her to commit suicide. Everything built up and exploded in the end. She had to endure so many pressures and uncertainty. With everyone hurting Ophelia so much, she became crazy and decided to end her life.

I personally could write an entire essay on this topic since i have Ophelia's monologue and despite her being my usual flavor of 'strong female character', she's still my homegirl and i'll defend her to death. Ophelia's loose screw-ness is a combination of having a ridiculously controlling father and brother, and a boyfriend who is the master of the mixed signal. The conflicting info she receives from both sides is enough to send her over the edge, with her father telling her to stay extra virgin and her boyfriend who she is positive loves her from more than what's down there. Also, add to that father's murder, her brother's absence, and her boyfriend's descent into madness and subsequent lewd behavior, and out comes an insane, depressed, and suicidal Ophelia.

Just saying, maybe Hamlet is the one to blame for her death because I think that she trusted and loved Hamlet more than her father. So after Hamlet was treating her violently, she have finally snapped that she couldn't take anything else. It is common to see people to commit suicide when they suddenly are receiving a lot of stress. She loved Hamlet too much that it hurts more when she faced him once again.

In my opinion, Ophelia was the most tragic character in this play. She was kept being used by everyone else: Hamlet used her as a tool of revenge and even her father Polonius used her as well. But, I think Hamlet is the one who should take the blame. After all, if it wasn't his grand revenge plan, Ophelia wouldn't be scared and heartbroken, eventually turning crazy and committing suicide.

I feel really sorry to Ophelia, she is innocent and pitiful. She did nothing wrong, but she becomes the victim in this war. Hamlet and her father's dead make her crazy. She loves Hamlet, but Hamlet killed her father.

I think Claudius should take the blame for Ophelia's death because this whole started because of his unrighteous acts on his way to thrones.

She didnt deserve death, no one deserves suicide. However, multiple people can be blamed for her death. I think Shakespeare did this purposely; NO REAL ANTAGONIST IS HERE, EVERYONE ACTS UPON THEIR INTERESTS AND THUS BECOMES EACH OTHERS ANTAGONIST. For example, Hamlet can be blamed because he dumped her, where her dad can be blamed for using her. than again you can blame Ophelia for having a weakened heart, and not calling out for help either to Hamlet or to someone she could trust.

I think Hamlet, Polonius, and the society should take the blame for her death. To begin with, Polonius is guilty by using her as a tool to spy on Hamlet even though she was his daughter. Hamlet started to dislike women when his mother married Claudius. And for this reason, Ophelia is no exception regardless of the relationship. Hamlet is guilty by criticizing Ophelia that she should go to nunnery and stop giving birth to sinners (like Claudius). And since the society they lived on was patriarchal, these events were possible to happen and she could not oppose them or rely on someone.

I believe that Hamlet should be the one taking the blame for Ophelia because she was really in love with Hamlet, but Hamlet destroyed her heart due to his cruel actions. If Hamlet had even a single right mind, he would have at least treated her with more respect and not think that all women are sexual beings.

I think that that person was Hamlet. He has told Ophelia that he never loved her and has accused her of being unchaste, and then he has killed her father. Although he didn't intend to kill Polonius and thought it was Claudius hiding behind the curtain, the fact remains that the man Ophelia loves has killed her father.

No one is to be blamed for Ophelia's death. I believe it is the person's choice whether they want to commit suicide or not. No one told her to suicide, it was her decision. However, I guess that Hamlet, Laertes, and Polonius had to do something with her going crazy. Laertes told her to stay away from the person she loves, Hamlet has gone crazy, and Polonius had died.
