We talked a lot about Ophelia this week so why not talk about her more?
So imma ask dis. Who should take the blame for Ophelia's death? Hamlet? Polonius? Herself? And did she deserve all the the crap she got from everyone around her?
I feel bad for Ophelia but at the same time I don't? All that "nunnery" talk Hamlet gave her should have been expected just because she's the one who dumped him. But overall, I think it's Hamlet's fault that she died only because he was being such a jerk and he also killed her father.

i feel sorry for Ophelia as well; she had to endure so many things that weren't even her fault. Since she was very fragile, I understand her choice to commit suicide.
I think that the whole environment drove her to be insane and commit suicide. It wasn't necessarily "someone's" fault, but as a whole, everyone is blamed for her death. For instance, Hamlet is blamed for using Ophelia as a tool for his revenge. Same for Polonius, who used Ophelia even if she is his only daughter. Ophelia killed herself since she couldn't endure everything that happened to her. As a result, I believe that Opheli is responsible for her death as well. If she endured everything, she would at least could know the truth.
Ophelia didn't deserve any treatments she received from her family member and Hamlet. It was just the burden of society and culture itself that brought Ophelia to her death. The widely accepted idea during this period in Denmark and England, where the story was written.

I think the majority of blame should be placed on Ophelia if there is a need for blame. Everyone at least once goes through hardships or struggles that are seemingly too harsh for them to handle. However, whether one endures or not is totally dependent upon emotion management. In the end, it is Ophelia who chose to commit suicide in the water, no one else.
I feel bad for her too. She has gone through lots of things, more than anyone can imagine of. However, can committing suicide be justified in any reason? That I do not know of...

I think it's everyone's fault that Ophelia became crazy and insane. Her boyfriend suddenly changed, father told her not to talk to bf anymore, and at last her dad was dead. Since she was so pure and innocent she couldn't bear with those grief.

I think she should blame the era which she was living. Her father forced her to break up with Hamlet and she obeyed it. i think it because she has to obey it. If she is living in our era she has other choice.

Though all of these terrible things happened to her, in the end, she chose to kill herself. I don't think this should be blamed on a single person, each one contributed to Ophelia's madness and decision, without realizing. She must hv realized that its a sin to kill herself right, since she's christian? Is that why she chose to drown herself? In the hope to cleanse herself?

I agree with Misato.I think it is everyone's fault but why is everyone's fault because they were born in the conservative era.Let's think in Ophelia's shoes, if your father tells you to break up with your dear boyfriends or girlfriends but you do not have any choices since he is your father;your father is a courtier,he is afraid to let king knows his daughter is getting together with prince;your brother tells you that Hamlet does not like, you he just plays you because your identities is different,he is a prince but you just a normal girl, how come Hamlet likes you?All these happened is because their society teaches them a wrong value.

I feel very bad for Ophelia and i think that her suicide is not her fault but everybody else's. Ophelia was used by all the people she thought cared about her and was fed her with different opinions and advices without caring about her inner feelings. Seeing her loved ones act differently becasue of their own cause makes her seem like the old ones are dead hence the only option left for her was to die.

o.o i think Ophelia is the only true victim of this story! Hamlet and Polonius are the ones to be blamed for her suicide. well… maybe not Hamlet since he was derived mad by all the horrible events crumbling his life. Ophelia was part of the reason why Hamlet gone mad.. however she didn't have a choice. As an innocent character, obeying her father is predictable. Therefore i'd say that Polonius is the one to be blamed for Ophelia's death since his plan was part of why Hamlet gone mad, such "madness" also led to the death of Polonius and the old Hamlet Ophelia once loved :3

I think Ophelia should take the blame on herself. I mean, first of all, it wasnt someone else who killed her; she committed suicide. Everyone in the world goes through enormous amounts of hardships. Hamlet shouldve been dead way earlier if what she's going through is tough. To me, she seems just very irresponsible for all the actions she took.

I think most of characters in this book and Ophelia herself contributed to suicide. Hamlet and Polonius both tried to use her for their fight but Ophelia also didn't take care her self a lot. Also it was her decision to committing suicide so I think it was everyone's fault.

I think it is mainly Polonius's fault because he was the one who forced Ophelia to do something that caused her to be insane

I personally think that Ophelia was a victim in this story. She had all the reasons to become insane at the end. Her boyfriend became crazy all of the sudden, her father and brother told her to break up with him, and at the end of the story her father dies. I would definitely go insane if these things happen to me at once. I mean, who wouldn't?

I think Ophelia didn't do anything wrong. For her, she had no choices. She was innocent. She had to obey and listen to her father. She can't love Hamlet even though she really loved him. She is a victim i think.

These kinda questions tend to go on a endless chain of finding who or which is responsible, like Hamlet acting mad -> father's order -> Claudius killing king Hamlet -> etc. So I'll just go with the one I believe most that contributed to her suicide. As for this, I'd say that it is Polonius. If her father hadn't order to keep distance from Hamlet, then he wouldn't have become so mad in front of her and make her sad by saying harsh things to her which eventually led to her own death. So it's her father who is to blame.
