So in class we were discussing whether Polonius is a good dude or a bad dude. What do you guys think? Do you think he's a bad dad? I think he's both a bad guy and a bad dad. Using his daughter definitely does not make him father of the year.

I also think that Polonius is a bad dad and person. As you said, using own daughter is bad; I think Polonius should have used his own ability to figure things out and obtain something. It is unfair for Ophelia, to be used as implement. If Polonius was a good dad, he would wish the best for his daughter and her happiness.
He is also the bad guy as Ms. Boyd and Mr. Edward said. Because his thoughts were focused on vulgar matters, he warns his children and others not to be like him, which si being hypocrite. To make things worse, he doesn't even realize that he is being hypocrite. Thus, he doesn't make any efforts to make things better.
As a result, I think that Polonius is both a bad guy and a bad dad. I think that he was the one of the major causes of the tragedy.

I honestly have never thought him as a bad guy. From Hamlet's perspective, of course he can be perceived as an evil, cunning guy who spies on him and separates him and Ophelia. However, observing as a third person, what I see is a caring father who sincerely worries about his son, daughter, and a king. His loyalty is well represented throughout the play.
Again, I am fully aware how this is not the case for Hamlet. However, had I been in the same position, I would still have done the same thing: separating my daughter from Hamlet, who obviously has turned into a mad monster.

I think he was a good guy but at the same time bad guy. He told Ophelia to break up with Hamlet because he was worried about the status difference between them and he thought that Hamlet was not serious. It was bad that he used Ophelia as a tool but it was her job to tell the truth to Claudius.

In the beginning, I thought he was just a good, fatherly guy. After discussion I still think that way. He just had a bad history. He was bad during his youth and wanted to make sure his son wasnt the same. Ms Boyd mentioned anyone like Polonious (king advisor. think of Jafar) must hv done terrible things to get that position. That might be true. But I also think he's just a good father. I dont think hes using Ophelia. He just wanted to knw if Hamlet really loved her

Actually,it depends on whose perspective.I personally think Polonius is a good father. He always thinks of his children, protects them, gives a lot of advices to them, but if he is a courtier he is bad.In the first time ,when he showed out,I thought he is a good person since he was helping Claudius to handle lots go thing but then as Ms.Boyd mentioned like him that kind of courtier must've done lots of things to get that position that he wants to.

I think he's good from the perspective of a parent. Although he spied on his son and ordered Ophelia to stop talking to Hamlet, its understandable. After all, Polonius is worried about his kids. If he didn't care, why would he even think about his son who's far away from home or the relationship of his daughter. Polonius is just a father who doesn't want his children go off the wrong path or harm themselves. He has a good incentive but a rather harmful result on Ophelia. But Polonius's initial plan wasn't to drive Hamlet insane… so …. i don't think we can blame Polonius completely

He is both a good and bad guy in the play. To Claudius, he's a trusted advisor who is always there in times of need. And a loving father who can give sincere advices for his daughter and son. On the other hand, he is a complete villain who took a part in killing the previous king. He took all the rights to have a great father from Hamlet.

I think Polonius is bad as well. He seems like he always tries to suck up to King Claudius. He does everything for his benefit and for his own reputation. Polonius used Ophelia to spy on Hamlet which basically touches on the fact that he can go to great lengths to get his job done.

I think Polonius was good dad but not good person because he actually took care of his daughter little bit. However he acted really bad to Hamlet and supported Claudius even though he knew the truth. So in family he was good dad but in social group he was bad guy.

I think Polonius is a bad father and a bad person because he used his daughter for his own goal. Some people might say that he is a good father because of the advices that Polonius gave to Larteas, but it could be not form his heart.

I remember in class we discussed about this. Polonius was basically saying to Ophelia, "I used you but I still love you." So I agree with Danielle, he can be a bad dad and a person. Using his own daughter to get an information isn't right thing to do. He should have used his own ability to figure out something.

i will say he was not bad dad but for Hamlet he was bad not as girlfriend's father. His mouth was to cheap and he did not tell any truth to Claudius. i did not like his behave or other thing but for ophelia. He was good dad any other father would do same thing to their own daughter.

I'd say he is bad. He's bad in trying to spy on Hamlet and is even worse on using his own daughter for that purpose. He may have gave advice to Laertes about life, but he didn't really do any act that involves his own sacrifice for others. Rather he sacrificed others for his own self. In that way, I don't find anything else that supports him as a good man nor father.

I think he has two sides. Polonius is bad just by the fact that he is working for someone who has killed the king and taken the throne. He also spies on Hamlet too. However, I felt like Polonius was sincere and behaved like a good father when he gave the fatherly advice to Laertes. I was able make a connection since my father gives me those kinds of advice and I really appreciate them although I don't really understand why the meanings of the advice at the moment.
